QuoteMan provides you with a welcome break from computing by occasionally interrupting you to display a thoughtful or meaningful quote.
How do I install QuoteMan?
Simply copy the QuoteMan program onto your hard drive.
Note: If you are using a version of the System Software prior to 7.5, you’ll want to copy the contents of the “Pre–System 7.5” folder into your System Folder. If you already have these files, you need not replace them.
Using QuoteMan
For QuoteMan to work, it must be running. To run it, double–click on the QuoteMan icon. After the splash screen goes away (you’ll have to click on it once if you’re not registered), QuoteMan will be ready to brighten your day! Remember that you must keep QuoteMan running in order for it to work.
QuoteMan is a simple little program, so it’s easy to operate. There is no required setup and should operate “out of the box.” However, if you want to customize the way that it works, there are several options that you may modify.
Preferences: Choosing “Preferences” from the Edit menu allows you to modify the way QuoteMan behaves.
If you want to increase or decrease the time between quotes, modify the value in “Display every _x_ minutes”. If this item is checked (as in the example above), QuoteMan will interrupt you after the specified time. If it is unchecked, QuoteMan will never interrupt you.
If you want to increase or decrease the time until a quote goes away automatically, modify the value in “Go away after _x_ seconds”. If this item is checked (as in the example above), QuoteMan will automatically close the quote window after the specified time. If unchecked, you must always close the window yourself.
If you want QuoteMan to display a quote every time you start your computer (i.e. turn it on or restart), select “Display when computer starts up”.
QuoteMan can play a sound to get your attention whenever it displays a quote. You can pick the sound of your choice from the popup menu. You can also tell QuoteMan to not play a sound by unchecking this item.
A check mark next to “Politically correct” tells QuoteMan that you might be offended by questionable ideologies and/or profanity. QuoteMan will not display such quotes if this option is turned on.
You can modify the appearance of quotes by selecting a font and size from the popup menus. You may have to resize the quote window to accommodate larger font sizes.
Adding Quotes
QuoteMan comes with a pretty sizable database of quotes, but registering (see “Registering QuoteMan” below) allows you to add quotes of your own.
Selecting “Add Quote…” from the File menu will display the above dialog. Type in the text of your quote and then enter the source. After you are finished, hit the Add button and your quote will be entered into the QuoteMan database.
About the Quote Database
QuoteMan comes with a sizable database of “canned” quotes. The quotes were chosen to provoke thought, for amusement value and a host of other reasons. It may be possible that you will find many of them offensive, stupid, racist, etc. If you find this to be the case, please utilize the “Politically Correct” feature in the preferences dialog.
Special note: The version you are using has been censored due to America Online’s restrictive uploading requirements. In particular, they will not allow Ryno Software to upload a version of QuoteMan that contains so–called “obscene” words. However, these words can readily be found throughout the AOL Reference Library including, ironically/hypocritically enough, a book of quotations. If you would like the full version, please get it from the Ryno Software web site. I apologize for this inconvenience.
Registering QuoteMan
QuoteMan is shareware. That means you can use it for awhile before you buy it. If you decide to use QuoteMan permanently, you can register using the Register application that was included with QuoteMan.
Normal pricing is as follows:
1–9 single user licenses are $10 per user
10–49 single user licenses are $8 per user
50+ single user licenses are $5 per user
Site licenses covering a single geographic location are $500
World–wide licenses valid for all locations on planet Earth are $1000
If you would like a floppy disk with the most recent version of QuoteMan, pricing is as follows:
1–9 single user licenses are $15 per user
10–49 single user licenses are $10 per user
50+ single user licenses are $6 per user
Site licenses covering a single geographic location are $600
World–wide licenses valid for all locations on planet Earth are $1100
To register, open the Register program and enter your name and email address. Select the pricing option that you desire for each Ryno Software product and then Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652–6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it’s already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.
Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgement when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgement.
If you are paying with Cash or USD Check you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:
Kagi
1442–A Walnut Street #392–3VN
Berkeley, California 94709–1405
USA
You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies, the conversion rate for non–USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical.
If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable department. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the form with their payment. Kagi can not invoice your company, you need to act on my behalf and generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.
Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email and without the payment, the form cannot be processed.
Payments send via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed. If you do not have an email address you should consider selecting the Postcard Receipt so that Kagi can inform you of your registration code. Kagi transmits the registration codes via email and paid postcard receipt only. If you select Floppy Disk option, please be sure to include your postal address. Also note that site and world–wide licensees should not expect to receive more than 20 floppies.
We’ve put a great deal of time and effort into programming QuoteMan as well as putting together the quote database. We would like to continue writing shareware, but a less than enthusiastic response to QuoteMan will ensure that we won’t. Please register.
Disclaimer
QuoteMan is provided “as is” with no guarantees, either express or implied. Although we find it highly improbable, if QuoteMan does anything to damage your computer and/or your data, Ryno Software takes no responsibility.
Version 1.0.0: First public release. Includes preferences for interval and “go away” times, sound and political correctness flag. Has Font and Size menus. “Add Quote” option available after registration.
Version 1.0.1: Some people reported that they could never get past the registration dialog. I was unable to reproduce the problem with my system, but probably found the bug. I would very much appreciate feedback from users still experiencing this anomaly.
Version 1.1: Changed interface to conform to Apple Grayscale Appearance guidelines. Moved font/size to preferences. Sounds now play asynchronously. Should work better with games that hog the CPU. Uses less memory and picks quotes faster. New features: quote on demand, clipboard support, display at startup.
Known Problems
Preliminary versions of QuoteMan 1.1 had problems with Adobe Type Reunion. Evidently this is a known problem with Type Reunion so they have developed a workaround. Unfortunately, the workaround automatically turns Type Reunion off for the problem application. This is what QuoteMan does.

Many people have helped to make QuoteMan possible. Among them are Alan Feirer, who produced some awesome digitized sounds; John Evans, who has provided oodles and oodles of quotes; Rob Marquardt, who has provided valuable insight and excellent beta testing and Tina Ring, who has put up with many long nights by herself while I worked on QuoteMan.
